“Stand Off” Peoples Choice Award Winner KAA 26th Annual Photography Show Photographer Karen A. Chase

Karen A. Chase

The Kent Art Association begins its 96th Year with plans for an ambitious season that includes 10 Exhibitions plus the Northeast Watercolor Society’s International Watercolor Exhibition held in October. The show season opens with the Members I Show (Feb. 23- March 17), a departure from previous years as it has switched places with the 27th Annual Student Show that will be held on three weekend days in March (24, 30, & 31st). The switch was made to accommodate Spring break, which for most secondary schools is near the end of February into early March.

The Members I Show is the first of 3 shows where the over 200 artists members of the KAA have an opportunity to show their most recent works. Because the KAA accepts a wide variety of mediums and styles in all its shows, ranging from (but not limited to) mixed media, sculpture, pen & ink, photography, pastels, acrylics, oils and watercolors to styles that encompass the very traditional to the very modern, all shows are an interesting blend of subjects and artistic expression.

The Members I Show is followed by the Spring Juried Show (April 13-May 12). This show is open to all artists working in any medium. Artwork has to be accepted for exhibition by a jury of artists. All shows except the last show in December are Judged and cash awards given in a variety of categories.

Currently there is one workshop planned with other programs to be announced later. KAA president and retired art instructor, Connie Horton will be giving a workshop on “Exploring Methods & Media” on April 8, 9 & 10. The cost of the 3-day program is $150.

The Elected Artist & Solo Show (May 25 – June 9) is next, followed by the Presidents Show (June 22-Aug. 4), our principal Juried Show of the year. Next is a new addition from last year, the Small Works Porch Show (August 2 & 3) held as part of the Kent Summer Sales Days.

The second Members Show is next (August 17-Sept. 8). followed by the Fall Juried Show (Sept. 21-Oct. 14). On October 20 running daily until Nov 2 is the Northeast Watercolor Societies International Watercolor Exhibition and then the KAA’s 4th Annual Juried Photography Show (Nov. 16- Dec. 1). This Show will be open until 8 pm on Nov. 29 & 30 for the Kent Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Champagne Stroll. The season closes with a special show added this year to thank all of our dedicated Volunteers. The Volunteer Show will be open daily from 1-5 pm December 8-15.

Unless previously stated all shows are open Thursday-Sunday from 1-5 PM. Admission is free. There is an Opening Reception and Awards presentation on the day the Show opens (generally a Saturday) from 2-4 pm.

The KAA Gallery is located at 21 So. Main St. Kent, CT 06757. Our phone number is 860-927-3989. Email us at kent.art.assoc@snet.net

Please go to our website www.kentart.org to download our complete calendar and to check for additional programs to be added throughout the year. You can also become a member (there’s lots of benefits), learn more about the organization and each of the shows, download entry forms, follow links to member artists websites, and /or make a donation.

The KAA is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit that relies on membership fees and the generosity of its volunteers and patrons to continue to provide both beginning and established artists a place to exhibit their artwork, meet with other artists and non-artists, and to learn more about their craft. We look forward to seeing you this year and welcome your comments.
